Chickens 2005

Starting Over

In May 2005 we ordered a new brood of chicks. We decided that we wanted between 4 and 8 egg laying hens (2-4 dozen eggs a week). We ordered 8 pullets (baby laying hens) and 3 meat birds (specially bred for meat production) as an experiment. The hatchery had warned us that if they didn't think the chicks would be warm enough in transit they may include extra roosters for free. Sure enough, when the chicks arrived there were 5 free cockerals (baby roosters) included!

Chicks!

New quarters

When the chickens were big enough to move outside, Steve began work on a new coop. The "chicken tractor" had been useful, but was a lot of work to move around, and we decided to go with a more traditional setup.

The children enjoy feeding scraps to the chickens.
